Rachel and Nathan part ways when Cable launches a private war on oppression in Peru. Regrettably, Rachel is seized by a mutant predator named Elias Bogan. Intrinsically allied with the Hellfire Club as an entity of evil, Bogan tyrannizes telepaths with contemptuous ease. Bogan impounds Rachel with psychic restraints and uses her to enact revenge on the former Hellfire Club associate, and current X-Treme X-Men member known as Sage. Through methodical attacks to isolate Sage and the X-Treme X-Men, Rachel causes a schism between the Xavier Institute and the X-Treme team, strife between the team and local mutants in Valle Soleada, and division and distrust within the X-Treme team itself. Deducing that Bogan's "Mysterious Telepath" is Rachel, Sage enlists the help of Kitty Pryde to disempower Bogan by emancipating Rachel. The team infiltrates Bogan's lair, Rachel is freed, and Kitty is reunited with one of her closest friends.

Finally free after months of captivity, Rachel celebrates her friendships and accepts Storm's offer to keep the peace between mutant and human as a globally sanctioned marshal of the X-Treme Sanctions Executive – The X.S.E.. It’s a new start for Rachel, where she finally gets a chance to be the girl she’s always wanted to be. Yet, the people most precious to Rachel -- her mother and father, Scott and Jean -- are not as they should be; Rachel's mother is a martyr, gone from this plane of existence and her father is in a relationship with one of her mother’s adversaries, Emma Frost. Consequently, to honor of her dearly departed friend and mother, Rachel appropriates the 'Marvel Girl' code-name, costume and the surname 'Grey'.

Rachel remains as one of the world’s most powerful mutants and an integral member of the X.S.E.; nevertheless, Rachel finds herself constantly faltering due to her own recklessness. Although her courage is incontestable, after numerous death defying incidents it becomes apparent that Rachel’s jejunity makes her a threat to her own team, especially after she allies herself with would-be world conquerors named the Hauk’ka. No longer confident with the self-sufficiency afforded to wielders of the Phoenix, Rachel must rely on her teammates and learns to respect their knowledge and instruction, even trusting the direction of Emma Frost.

Rachel accepts the opportunities to reconnect her familial ties --both Summers and Grey. Rachel makes amends with Scott, bonds with her uncle Alex, helps her brother Nathan, visits with her maternal grandparents and eventually accepts the death of Jean Grey. Unfortunately, Rachel’s supposed fresh start gradually veers towards the nightmare of her future timeline. Initially, Rachel’s line of fate was entwined with that of her teammate Psylocke in order to prevent a number of cataclysmic threats to the Multiverse. All was saved, yet a consequence was a decimation of the world’s mutant population. M-Day had diminished Earth’s mutants from millions to only a few hundred, and also brought about an occupation of Rachel’s home with the O*N*E* (the Office of National Emergency),  and enforcement by numerous Sentinels. The horrific reminders of the internment camps of her origin are resurfaced with the presence of the Sentinels, coupled with the monitored high security walls, mobility restrictions, and the provisional camps of mutant refugees.

After escaping for a brief reunion with her dearest friends in England, Rachel seeks seclusion within the home of her maternal grandparents, John and Elaine Grey. Sadly, Rachel’s dreams are obliterated when the Greys stage a family reunion; the Shi’ar send assassins to massacre every single member of Rachel’s family. In less than a minute, the Shi’ar Death Commandos almost succeed in eliminating the Grey genetic line; all except for Rachel, who is subsequently scarred with a trackable Shi’ar Deathmark. With the murderers of her family jailed by the O*N*E*, and knowing the consequences of her actions to the loved ones that remain, Rachel's vengeance is somewhat abated. Rachel eludes the Sentinels to seek counseling from a psychologist that helped her friend Kitty.
