Rachel Summers comes from an alternate timeline where she is the only child of Jean Grey and Scott Summers. In this timeline, after a series of events that ignites widespread fear and loathing for mutants, the United States government introduces a mutant control act. The US Military level the X-Men's home and their mentor, Professor Charles Xavier, is quickly and brutally eliminated. Although Rachel survives, she is apprehended and consigned to a geneticist named Ahab. The orphaned fourteen year old is drugged, tortured, and conditioned to become a mutant Hound. She is forced to use her psionic abilities to hunt other mutants, often killing friends, family and innocents. To cope with the unending horror of the Hound pens, Rachel surrendered to apathy. She helped kill her own kind to appease her tormentors; she became their best Hound. Meanwhile, the Sentinels are deployed to hunt down, kill or imprison all mutants. However, the Sentinel's programming goes awry, all super-powered beings become targets. Eventually North America falls under the control of the Sentinels.

Haunted by grief and guilt, Rachel resists her conditioning and turns on Ahab, mangling his body with her powers. Rachel is sent to the South Bronx Mutant Internment Center where she is reunited with Storm, Colossus, Kate Pryde Rasputin, Magneto, and her beloved Franklin Richards. The surviving X-Men have formed an anti-Sentinel resistance and with Wolverine's help, must prevent the Sentinels from initiating a world war and a subsequent nuclear holocaust. Using Rachel's mutant powers to send Kate's mind back in time, the X-Men plan to change the odious fate of mutants in the present by altering events in the past. With their inhibitor collars disabled and their powers restored, Rachel exchanges Kitty Pryde's consciousness (from the past), with Kate's mind (of the present), enabling Kate to act in the past; the rest of the team attacks the Sentinel's main headquarters. Although Kate prevents the assassination of Senator Robert Kelly in the past, nothing changes in the future timeline. The X-Men are slain; only Kate and Rachel survive.

Weeks later, Rachel and Kate infiltrate the cyberobotics complex in order to destroy project Nimrod. Trapped inside, Rachel and Kate are overwhelmed by the Sentinels' forces. Under Kate's post hypnotic suggestion, Rachel taps into the Phoenix Force, which augments her time travel abilities, and Rachel physically enters the timestream.
